After 66 years of Communist rule Mongolia became democratic in 1990. Since then there has been little if any political unrest and it is usually deemed a very safe country to visit.

SAFETY

There are very few reports of any problems travelling within the country, although the capital Ulaan Baatar has had many incidents of pick-pocketing. Travellers are advised to keep a safe eye on cameras, wallets and shoulder bags.

Women travellers should find no problems in Mongolia where women's rights are well respected and the men are usually courteous and friendly.

Disabled travellers will find some difficulties throughout Mongolia. Wheelchair access is very restricted and the roads are notoriously bumpy.

Senior travellers should find no special problems, although the roads do take their toll
and journeys should be carefully planned to avoid long periods in Jeeps.
